Samuel R. Hazo is an American composer and conductor who was born on November 3, 1966, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He studied music education at Duquesne University and conducted at Indiana University in Bloomington. Hazo has written numerous works for wind band, string orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles. He is particularly known for his compositions for wind band, including "As Winds Dance," "Ride," and "Arabesque." Hazo was also the first ever composer-in-residence with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted numerous ensembles, including the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, and the United States Air Force Band. Hazo's music combines elements of classical, jazz, and contemporary music, and is known for its emotional expressiveness and cinematic quality.
